  • The upcoming summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the 17 and 18 August 2013 is an annual regional meeting that brings together 15 member states.

    SAIIA speaks to Aditi Lalbahadur who is researcher with SAIIA's South African Foreign Policy and African Driver's Programme. We asked her:
    1. What themes are likely to emerge during this year's SADC summit?
    2. Malawi is the chairperson for the next year. What are you expecting from President Joyce Banda's chairmanship?
    3. (Pick up from Malawi-Tanzania issue) Aditi, you have been working on the issue of the border dispute between Malawi and Tananzia. Tell us about this?

    1.What are your expectations as Malawi takes over the SADC Presidency?

    2. You have said in the past that SADC needs to expedite its decision making processes. Is this still the case or has the organisation made progress in this regard?

    3. SADC, the EAC and COMESA have entered into negotiations to create the Tripartite Free Trade Agreement? What is you sense of the progress made so far.

  • SAIIA and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) have been working on a joint project that examines the political economy of regional integration in Southern Africa. The two organisations held a two day meeting on the 2nd and 3rd of July 2013 to discuss this issue with various stakeholders. We spoke with Dr Bruce Byiers of the ECDPM and asked him: Why this emphasis on supporting Southern Africa's regional integration agenda? What are some of the key issues that have emerged over these past few days? Who will benefit from these findings and discussions?
